The Sweet Side of Seaside

January 25, 2017 | by Nicole Bailey

Above photo: A tray of sweets on display at A Sweet Affaire, held every February.

In February, we invite you to bask in the sweet side of Seaside. Thanks to the many local candy shops and confectioners, as well as one of the tastiest events in Seaside, A Sweet Affaire, your senses will be awakened to a whole new world. Come explore the many stops on a candy coated journey filled with sparkling colors and rich aromas.

You can begin your sweet exploration with the unique Seaside stores specializing in sugary decadence. Many of these tantalizing locations, like Phillip’s Candies, located next to Fultano’s on Broadway, create their own treats. Phillip’s has been making salt water taffy in Seaside since 1897. While they bag up your selections, take in all the nostalgic candies like whirly pops and jaw breakers. Try not to let the aroma of kettle corn make your mouth water. Around the corner on Columbia at Seaside Candyman, wander through aisles of brightly colored candy, stacked in vertical tubes, one after the other, aisle after aisle. Spin the wheel for a free treat or try an ice cream cone for just $2.

At Schwietert’s Cones and Candy, midway up Broadway, choose from a monstrous assortment of Jelly Belly flavors or pick up a collectable Pez dispenser set to bring home. Their selection of truffles will be hard to resist too. At Bruce’s Candy Kitchen’s satellite location at the Seaside Outlet Center, the scent of hand crafted chocolates and caramel dipped apples will embrace you while you marvel at the old fashioned rock candy. Just like the confectioners of times gone by, they package everything up in cute little pink and white striped boxes. And don’t forget about Portland Fudge Company in the last block of Broadway (closest to the Prom and Pacific Ocean), where you will struggle to choose from the dozens of flavors of fudge, divinity and brittle.

If after this first foray into candy land, you haven’t satisfied your sweet tooth yet, attend A Sweet Affaire at the Seaside Convention Center on Sunday, February 12, 2017. This annual favorite is hosted by Sunset Empire Park and Recreation. It features dozens of local sweet shops and restaurants featuring their most delectable temptations. Sample unique creations in candy, cakes, cookies and more. Also available are wine and beer tasting with live music and a silent auction.

Come visit Seaside during our sweetest month of the year. Hotel prices are at their lowest, the winter storms give way to sunny windows of time, perfect for beach combing and we have plenty of tempting treats to offer. Camping in Seaside

Memorial Day weekend is right around the corner. One of my very favorite things to do during Memorial Day weekend is to go camping. I love setting up the tents, snuggling in a warm sleeping bag, sitting around the campfire roasting marshmallows for s’mores, and smelling like a campfire all weekend. I love every bit of it! If you’ve never camped by the Pacific Ocean then you are missing out! You get to add the salty air, sandy beach, and all the benefits of being near Seaside to add to your camping experience.
