Seaside’s Very Own Rainforest: Tillamook Head

March 3, 2017 | by Josh Garhofer

Tillamook Head Trail

A good muddy trail always greets with a smile. In this case, that smile is the fusion of a temperate rain forest terrain and the challenge of the day’s hike. Combine the aromatic smells of local flora and fauna; the Tillamook Head Trail is 66,528 feet of pure bliss.

Easy to find, Tillamook Head Trail, is located at the south end of Seaside at the top end of Sunset Boulevard. The 6.3-mile (each way) hike starts with a brawny uphill that tapers off into a slight, and mild, incline. The maximum elevation is 1,248 feet with markers along the trail, determining how many miles one has traversed. Don’t feel pressured to hastily finish the hike. A quick rest will allow you to stop and enjoy the scenery; blazing through the trail too fast will leave you missing out on interesting finds. Bring your best hiking boots and the thirst for exploration, but be mindful to stay on the trail. Straying from the clear path could harm the foliage as well as yourself.

Don’t forget some water and your favorite snack. I always pack a few bananas and granola bars in my bag. The quick source of protein and potassium can make all the difference when tackling a foreign trail.

The natural sights and sounds of the Tillamook Head Trail make for a perfect early morning or mid-day voyage for the curious hiker. Keep your footing, watch out for those muddy spots, and make sure to enjoy the trail.

Editor’s Note: Look for the trailhead at the south end of Seaside on Sunset Boulevard. Head towards the Seaside Cove and keep heading south – and up. You can’t miss the trailhead parking at the top of the road. Need a visual aid, visit our hiking page for a complete overview of the trail.

Wave Energy

Wave energy refers to energy generated from the power of waves near their surface. There are different types of devices designed to convert wave energy, but the ones that seems to be most in use at the moment as researchers continue to investigate this source of renewable energy are buoys. Columbia Power Technologies, an Oregon-based alternative energy company, recently launched a prototype wave energy buoy in the gentle waters of the Puget Sound as it races to be one of the first suppliers of wave-generated energy.
