Seaside Without A Car

August 23, 2019 | by Shellie Bailey-Shah

If you’ve visited Seaside in the past, you’ve likely come by car. You can come to this part of the Oregon Coast by airplane via charter operators at the Seaside Municipal Airport, if you’d like. But if you just want to leave the driving to someone else and reduce pressure on the environment, here’s an easy way to get to Seaside without a car.

NorthWest POINT offers motor-coach service from Portland to Seaside and other beach communities. Two buses run daily to and from the coast – one in the morning and one in the evening. Once you get here, Seaside is a very walkable town, and you should have no problem getting where you need to go on foot or by bike.

You have other public transportation options once in Seaside, as well. From Memorial Day weekend through September, the Seaside Streetcar Trolley runs hourly from 11 am to 7:30 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. It travels through downtown, north to 12th Avenue and south to The Cove and the trailhead for Tillamook Head. It’s just $1 per ride.

Finally, if you’d like to explore beyond Seaside, you can catch a ride with the Sunset Empire Transportation District’s NW Connector to the neighboring towns of Astoria, Cannon Beach, and beyond. It’s just $3 per person per day.

If you go:

Purchase Amtrak or Greyhound tickets in advance online, by app, by phone or in person in Seaside at the Chevron gas station (1215 S. Holladay Dr.), Sunset Empire Transit District office (39 N. Holladay Dr.) or Seaside Lodge & International Hostel (930 N. Holladay Dr.).

The one-way fare from Portland to Seaside is just $17 for adults. Seniors get a discounted fare of $15.30. Children (ages 2-12) cost $8.50. It’s important to know that while babies and young children are allowed to ride, not all buses have seat belts to secure car seats. The ride is 2.5 hours long; there’s free wifi and power outlets on the bus.

You can bring one bike on the bus for free, if space allows. Or you can reserve space in advance for your bike for $5. You also can rent bikes in Seaside at Wheel Fun Rentals (321 S. Holladay Dr. and 153 Ave. A) or the Prom Bike Shop (622 12th Ave.).

and so much more!

I walked along the Prom last weekend on a beautifully bright and sunny day and found myself surrounded by walkers, runners, people on all sorts of wheels, strollers, couples holding hands, and dogs of all sizes leading their people around. I also heard all sorts of accents and languages-and saw plenty of cameras.

Camping in Seaside

Memorial Day weekend is right around the corner. One of my very favorite things to do during Memorial Day weekend is to go camping. I love setting up the tents, snuggling in a warm sleeping bag, sitting around the campfire roasting marshmallows for s’mores, and smelling like a campfire all weekend. I love every bit of it! If you’ve never camped by the Pacific Ocean then you are missing out! You get to add the salty air, sandy beach, and all the benefits of being near Seaside to add to your camping experience.
