Fall in Seaside

September 27, 2011 | by Becky Jensen

It was a misty weekend last weekend on the coast. But a little rain doesn’t stop life from happening in Seaside, especially when you own a dog. As a dog owner, I sometimes recite the famous quote:

“Neither by snow nor rain nor heat nor darkness from accomplishing their appointed course with all speed…” (from Herodotus’ Histories and not actually the Postman’s Creed).

My dog doesn’t care about rain, or wind, or snow, or that I’ve been working all day. He wants a walk.

So, even though the sun was not out, on Saturday I took Jack down to the beach. It always surprises me how, despite being a little wet, I do enjoy walking on the beach. The nice thing is that there are so many less people out when the sun is not showing. It’s usually just the hardcore beach-goers all decked out in brightly colored rain gear.

Jack and I headed along a stretch of beach and in a few minutes we were, of course, wet. He was running on the sand, totally happy. After we got home, I towel dried him off and put on some dry clothes. It felt so much like the fall season that I drove over to Safeway, grabbed a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks and drove to the Cove to watch the stormy waves (one of my favorite fall activities).

When I got to the Cove, it was packed! There were so many surfers out in the water (goes back to my earlier statement saying life doesn’t stop in Seaside for a little rain). I had the best time just sitting in my warm car, all nice and dry, sipping my beverage and watching the waves and surfers. Seagulls hunkered down on logs while the wind whipped by them. It felt like a perfect fall day.

I’m looking forward to sweatshirts, switching my iced lattes to warm ones and pulling out my rain gear so Jack doesn’t miss his daily walk. I love every season! Each has it’s own unique flavor and things that make it wonderful. As the summer winds to a close I look forward to the leaves changing colors, the wind picking up again and enjoying Seaside in the fall. There will be lots of sunny days, blustery days and wonderful days like I had on Saturday.
