Celebrate spring by drawing butterflies with colored pencils.  Explore the basics of butterfly anatomy using the techniques of color mixing and blending to create a fun and original drawing of a butterfly. Dorota will explain techniques on how to proportionally enlarge drawings, and how to use bilateral symmetry to draw this beautiful species.

Butterflies are essential pollinators for the ecosystem and they depend on native plants for survival.  They feed and lay eggs only on certain types of plants.  Monarch butterflies depend on milkweed, Fender’s Blue rely on lupin and our local Silverspot butterflies gravitate towards native violets.

Dorota will bring specimens of Monarch, Silverspot, and Oregon Swallowtail butterflies so you can see them in person and participants are encouraged to bring a favorite photo or book, on butterflies, for your own reference. Registration is required, and all materials will be provided.

Dorota Haber-Lehigh received a Bachelor of Arts degree, from Pacific University, with a focus on printmaking and art history.  She designed, illustrated and published a children’s book titled ABC of Native Plants of the Coastal Pacific Northwest and is currently at work on books about native berries and wildflowers of the Pacific Northwest.  She is also a member of the Oregon Botanical Artists and the Native Plant Society of Oregon.
