History and Hops: Labor Day Riots ’63 w/ RJ Marx

The Seaside Museum Presents History and Hops: Seaside’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Labor Day Riots with RJ Marx. Seaside entered the new year of 1963 hoping to avoid a repeat of the 1962 Labor Day riots, which had brought national attention to our coastal city. No one wanted a repeat of the city’s 1962 Labor Day weekend, when crowds overwhelmed firefighters and police personnel.

R.J. Marx is an author, editor and journalist. At the Record-Review newspaper in Bedford, New York, he won numerous awards for his journalism, including the New York Press Association’s awards for the state’s best community newspaper. In 2015, he relocated to the Oregon Coast, where he was the editor of the Seaside Signal and South County reporter for the Astorian until 2023. His experience covering Oregon’s North Coast introduced him to the people and historical events of Seaside in the 1960s. He lives in Seaside with his wife Eve and their dogs Lucy and Trixie.

The event is free to attend, and everyone is welcome to join in the fun!

Preserving Seaside’s History since 1974, the Seaside Museum & Historical Society is a non-profit educational institution with the mission to collect, preserve, and interpret materials illustrative of the history of Seaside and the surrounding area. The museum is open Wednesday – Saturday from 11 AM – 4 PM.
